This page describes how to add an area code to outbound calls.
Some users want to be able to call within the same area code without having to enter the full destination number. For example, in the USA it's common to dial 7 digits instead of the full 10 digit NANP number.
Since the system routes are in the system dialplan (with the full number) we will need to prepend the area code before trying the routes. The system does this using the area code of the external callerid set in the telephone line.
Configuring the inbound group
- If you haven't already, create an inbound group and number.
- Using the top-right selection box ensure you're working as your system level user, not a sub-customer.
- Click on Global » Routing » Inbound groups.
- Edit the inbound group which contains the number you're going to use as external callerid.
- In the "Area code" field enter the area code that should be prepended to any numbers dialled that are not full national or international numbers. Ensure that the area code is in the system dialplan format. For example, if the system dialplan is "us" and your number is in New York then you might enter "212". If the system dial plan is "e164" and your number is in London you might enter "4420".
- Save the inbound group.
Using the area code
- If you haven't already, set your number as the external callerid of your telephone line.
- Make a call to a PSTN number in the same area code as your telephone's external callerid, but without including the area code.
- The system will first try to find a route for the number dialled. If none is found, it will prepend the external callerid's area code and try again to find a route. The call should arrive at the full number.
- If the call does not work have a look at taking traces. Taking a trace using Billing and analysis » Analysis » Traces will give you a detailed record of what exactly happened with the call.
